Essay

2007. In many works of literature, past events can affect, positively or negatively, the present activities, attitudes, or values of a character. Choose a novel or play in which a character must contend with some aspect of the past, either personal or societal. Then write an essay in which you show how the character’s relationship to the past contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole.

Miss Lonelyhearts is tired a man tired of being a legman. In other words he is tired of doing all the work and or running errands. He decides to take a job sort of as a joke, but more importantly he takes this job to hopefully one day it will turn into a gossip column instead of a column for advice. So he hates his past and wants to make a joke out of his future.

This sounds like a bad mess, he is a heavy drinker and he is also a sex addict. When he wakes up he tries to figure out how not to want to have sex. He struggles with this throughout the whole book and honestly it links to him hating his job I believe. He doesn’t get what he wants there so he figures that he can get what he wants in another sense. He wants to feel superior, because he does not or never did get that feeling at work. This is how a lot of guys are they want sex to feel better about themselves. It gives the self-esteem,and manhood. He has become something that he is not. He knows God is his answer to every problem but he will not say it he is too afraid that his boss will torment him because he says Christ is the answer. I do not get understand why men let their pride get in their way of everything they say or do. This also come from his past of being criticized for the things he has done.  Men have a prideful attitude about them. They get it from their parents or from experiences of the past.

Past experiences affect who you become and will become. When you have been abused you are you usually keep to yourself and stay away from others. When you are rejected like I feel Miss Lonelyhearts was rejected and that why he is so into always wanting sex. Miss Lonelyhearts was a reject that nobody wanted, the only reason the ladies sleep with him is because they are also lonelyhearts that were not being loved or wanted.
